From the desk of Pastor Rev. William "Bill" Dandridge

We have been preaching a sermon series on the seven recorded miracles of Apostle John in his gospel.

The focus of John’s gospel is the Lord’s Judean ministry and really only the last part of that. He devoted most of 9 chapters (John 12-20) to the Lord’s last wee k and used 1/3 of the gospel’s 879 verses to describe His last 24 hours. The first 11 chapters define the Lord’s ministry through John’s selective use of 7 miracles.

Miracle 1, Water Into Wine (John 2:1-11)

This miracle took place because an embarrassing discovery had been made. A wedding banquet Jesus was attending was in full swing when the servants suddenly realized they were out of wine. His mother, who was also there, asked Him to help. The Lord had 6 empty jars of stone filled with water which He then turned into wine. The master of the banquet proclaimed the wine Jesus had made to be superior to the wine they had served earlier, saying they had saved the best for last. The wine these jars now contained was superior to the wine the wedding guests had been drinking before, just as the New Covenant is superior to the Old Covenant (Hebrews 8:6). This miracle symbolized nothing less than the Mission of the Messiah; changing the empty way of man’s religion into a living, joyful, relationship with the Lord, as demonstrated by the wedding celebration.

Miracle 2, Healing the Official’s Son (John 4:43-54)

Here’s an act of God’s Grace, pure and simple. There’s no indication of the official’s nationality or background, his religious conviction or his worthiness, only his faith. He had heard of Jesus and of His miraculous power and begged Him to come heal his dying son. Jesus didn’t go with him but simply told the man his son would live. The man took Jesus at His word and departed for home. The next day, while he was still on the way, his servants met him with the news that his son had recovered. From their discussion he learned that his son had been made well from the very time he had spoken with Jesus. Because of this He and all his household became believers, saved by grace through faith.

Miracle 3, The Healing at the Pool of Bethesda (John 5:1-9)

Tradition holds that an angel periodically stirred the waters at the Pool of Bethesda. The first one into the water when that happened was healed. Many people who were sick or disabled waited there by the pool day after day for a chance to be healed. But a cripple can’t get himself to the pool in time. This man had been crippled for 38 years and had repeatedly tried and failed. Then Jesus came along and healed him.

He was at the very edge of healing, but all of his unsuccessful efforts to get into the pool had only made it obvious that his infirmity was preventing him from being healed. In the same way, the Law leaves us at the very edge of salvation but all of our unsuccessful efforts to keep it only make it obvious that our sinfulness will prevent us from being saved. Just like the cripple needed someone to heal him, we need someone to save us.

Miracle 4, The Feeding of the 5000 (John 6:1-5)

A large crowd had followed Jesus into a remote location and Jesus could see that they would need to be fed. But the men alone numbered 5,000 and adding the women and children could have more than doubled that number. Andrew found a boy with 5 small barley loaves and 2 small fish, and Jesus multiplied it into a satisfying meal for everyone with enough left over to fill 12 baskets. This is the practical demonstration of the Lord’s promise that if we seek His kingdom and His righteousness, all our other needs will be met as well (Matt. 6:31-33). But there’s more in view here than just our physical needs. We who believe in Jesus will never again feel that emptiness that tells us there’s more to life than just having our physical needs met.

Miracle 5, Walking on the Water (John 6:16-25)

The 5th miracle is also well known to everyone familiar with the Lord’s ministry. The disciples had labored all night long to row only about half way across the Sea of Galilee (about 3 miles), when the Lord passed by them … walking on the water! When they realized it was Jesus, they let him into the boat and immediately reached their destination. Without Him they were struggling just to make headway, but with Him in their midst the struggle was over.

Miracle 6, Healing The Man Born Blind (John 9:1-41)

A man had been blind from birth. Jesus made some mud, put it on the man’s eyes and told him to go wash it off. When the man did as Jesus instructed he could see. In the Jewish officials experience, no one had ever opened the eyes of a man born blind and they were determined to discredit the lowly beggar, especially since this event took place on the Sabbath. A lengthy interrogation followed, where the beggar put the religious experts to shame, and they ended up throwing him out. Afterward Jesus found him and introduced Himself. The man became a believer and worshiped him. Jesus said He came so the blind would see and those who see would become blind. When the Pharisees asked if He thought they were blind He said, “If you were blind you would not be guilty of sin, but now that you claim you can see, your guilt remains” (John 9:39-41). As it concerns your eternity, it doesn’t matter what you claim to know about Jesus. What matters is whether you know Jesus.

Miracle 7, Raising Lazarus From The Dead (John 11:1-44)

The last miracle John recorded before the resurrection shows the fulfillment of our Lord’s promise to all who believe in His name, as He called Lazarus out of the grave and restored him from death to life. The text shows that even though Jesus knew Lazarus was sick He actually waited until Lazarus was dead and buried before He responded to the sisters’ call for help. He did this so He could bring Lazarus back to life. It was an unmistakable model of the resurrection of the believing dead that contains the tiniest hint of the rapture. I don’t think people who don’t already know about the rapture see this, but those who do can take comfort in this faint hint contained in John 11:25-26.

Near the end of his gospel account John said, “Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book. But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name” (John 20:30-31).This tells us he selected these seven miracles specifically for their ability to help us believe that Jesus is who He claimed to be, and that by believing we might have eternal life. So what does these particular miracles show us that would help us believe? Miracle 1 shows He came to take us from the stone cold and empty way of man’s religion into a living and joyful relationship with Him. Miracle 2 shows we are saved by grace through faith. Miracle 3 shows our own futile works are insufficient to save ourselves. We need Him to save us. Miracle 4 is a demonstration of His supernatural care and provision for those who seek Him. Miracle 5 shows that because of His miraculous power, we can easily accomplish things through Him that would be all but impossible on our own. Miracle 6 reveals that if we’ll allow it, He can cause even the lowliest person born spiritually blind to see and believe. Miracle 7 is a promise that all who believe in Him will live even though they die, and those who live and believe will never die.

CHILDREN'S BLACK HISTORY PROGRAM

Sunday 04/10/2016 Sermon subject was the Three Looks of the Church:

Philippians 3:13-14

Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.

Phil. 3:13-14 THREE LOOKS THAT EVERY CHURCH NEEDS TO TAKE

In these verses here in Philippians chapter 3, we find the Apostle Paul taking a spiritual inventory of his life. In these verses, Paul relates that if any man could claim works as his banner, then Paul was that man. However, in verses 7-12, Paul tells us that all those things he had formerly counted on were just so much dung before God. He tells us that the most important thing in life is a personal relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ. What we find here, is that Paul, with all his accomplishments and his great spiritual lineage was still unsatisfied with where he was with the Lord, v. 12-13a. As Paul begins to look at his life, he sees himself as a man who has not yet arrived and one who stands in need of improvement. In essence, he is describing every Christian believer. Most of us have the testimony that we are saved by grace and on our way to Heaven. However, I would venture to say that not a single one of us is completely content with where we are before the Lord. When we get satisfied, we get complacent and when we get complacent, we cease to grow as a believer. While this is true for the individual, it is equally true for the church as a whole. I believe that we here at Holy Light MBC have a lot to be thankful for. God has blessed us greatly and we have seen him do many wonderful and exciting things here as the years have passed. Even now, we are seeing the church grow and we are experiencing his blessings both spiritually and materially. However, there is always the danger that we will become complacent and become satisfied with things as they are.

I. v. 13a TAKE A LOOK AT THE PAST

A. Take a look back and conduct a spiritual inventory.. As individuals and as a church body, we should list our accomplishments, our failures, our hopes, our dreams, etc. We need to see again where

B. Learn The wise man and the wise congregation will look back on the past and will learn from it. We will do our best to see that we are never again guilty of repeating the same mistakes. Yes, we all do things wrong. But, we should be wise enough to learn from those things so that we will never be guilty of them again!

As individuals, we are constantly beating ourselves up over things that were done before we were even saved. Well, it doesn't have to be that way. After all, the person who did all those awful things is dead, and a new man has taken his place; Rom 6:8; 2 Cor. 5:17. (Ill. Some folks just can't seem to get past their past.)

For the church, there is always a danger of looking back. Too many churches have allowed themselves to become just shells of what they were formerly. When this happens, and a backward look is taken, too often, churches and church members just want to go on living in the past instead of striving in the present. Learn to shake off the past and leave it behind. If you don’t as an individual, or if we don't as a church, then it will only serve as a weight to hinder us a to drag us down, Heb. 12:1.

II. v. 13b-14 TAKE A LOOK AT THE PRESENT

At How We Live - Paul was doing his best to live for Jesus. He was "pressing" forward. "Press" = "to run after a thing in order to lay hold on it." Paul’s Christian life wasn’t a hit or miss thing. He was all out for Jesus. Nothing else in life mattered as much as living for the Lord.) There are to ways that we should all be living. For Jesus - 1 Cor. 13:31 ; Every activity, every attitude, every actions, everything should be to His glory and His honor! This applies to this church as well as it does to every individual. By Jesus - Gal. 2:20 – Here is where so many Christians and so many churches miss it. We tend to try to do "Christian" things in our own power. In reality, we are powerless in and of ourselves, John 15:5. As we look around at where we are today as a church body and as individuals, we need to see that we must be allowing Christ to have total control of our lives. At How We Labor - (Paul was striving and reaching.) He was doing his best for the glory of the Lord! As we take a look at where we are today, how do we stack up as laborers? . The night is coming – John 9:4. Therefore, we need to throw ourselves into the Lord’s work without reservation.

III. v. 14 TAKE A LOOK AT THE FUTURE (PRIZE)

We Are Partakers Of A Holy Calling – We are called to be separate from the world – 2 Cor. 6:17; 2 Thes. 3:6; 1 Tim. 5:22. Ill. As born again children of God, we should be doing our best to live for the Lord and bring honor to his name by separating ourselves from the world and its filth. God’s desire is that we grow in holiness until we resemble Him – 1 Pet. 1:16. C. We Are Partakers Of A Heavenly Calling – (Ill. This life is a race, Heb. 12:1-2. Sometimes we are ahead and sometimes, we find ourselves being left behind. Often, this life becomes a struggle. One day, however, it will all be behind us and we will be home with the Lord!) Hang in there believers, stop looking back at the past, instead, look forward to the future. It is bright and never ending! One day, we will be in that Heavenly home. The hoping, dreaming and wishing will be over and we will be forever home with

TUESDAY NIGHTS (7:00 pm)

BIBLE STUDY & PRAYER SERVICE

We are continuing our study of the Book of Genesis- Pastor Dandridge is teaching and we are currently in Chapter 27 in our study of Esau and Jacob.

II Timothy 2:15 -Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed rightly dividing the word of truth

Putting God First In Your Life- Matthew 6:33 - But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.

The Second Sermon of the New Year I preached at the 11:00am service was How to Make the Rest of Your Life the Best of Your Life.

With our Time

The truth is that the way we spend our time says a lot about what we value in life. God wants us to value his relationship with him, and we need to show God this through the quality time that we spend with him. I have found that whenever I make time for God in my life I am better for it. I get some of God’s love in my life, I get God’s thoughts in my mind, I get God’s wisdom in my decisions

With Our Sundays

He also wants the first day of every week that you live for the rest of your life. Every Sunday is God’s day. He doesn’t even make room for excuses. He doesn’t allow for us to have our own reasons why we shouldn’t give the first day of our week to him. In fact, when we Keep Sunday’s as Holy days for God, when we faithfully attend Church and use the day as a day of rest, it is a signpost to the world around us that we are God’s.

Ezekiel 20:20

Keep my Sabbaths holy, that they may be a sign between us. Then you will know that I am the Lord your God.”

Of course every day is a day that the Lord has given us.

With Our Resources

You give your tithe to the Church where you go, because that is the place where you are being fed. It says, Bring all the tithes into the Church SO THAT there will be enough food in my temple.

God is saying, if we are all faithful tithers the Church is going to be able to be funded and empowered to do every single thing that God has called it to do. There won’t be lack, there won’t be decisions that need to be made according to the bank account instead of lining up to God’s direction for the Church.

We tithe so that there will be provision for the Church. This is the system that God has set up on earth to accomplish his work through the Church.

Your tithe sets your church up for success. But your tithe will also set you, and your family up for success.

Malachi 3:10-12

10 Bring all the tithes into the storehouse so there will be enough food in my Temple. If you do," says the LORD Almighty, "I will open the windows of heaven for you. I will pour out a blessing so great you won’t have enough room to take it in! Try it! Let me prove it to you! 11 Your crops will be abundant, for I will guard them from insects and disease. Your grapes will not shrivel before they are ripe," says the LORD Almighty. 12 "Then all nations will call you blessed, for your land will be such a delight," says the LORD Almighty.

The truth is that you can’t out give God. The truth is that there is nothing like living under the blessings, provision and abundance that God promises to us and to our families if we tithe.

The truth is that by holding back our tithes, we are not only robbing God of what is rightfully his, we also rob our church and our families of the blessings, provision and abundance that God has planned and predestined for us. The choice to tithe is a choice to bring your family into the best of what God has for you.

God wants the best part of your time. And he also wants the best part of your resources, the first 10%. Commit to becoming a faithful tither and witness as the Church does more than it has ever done before and your family is transformed by the blessing, provision and abundance of God Almighty.

With Your Decisions

The final area that I want to challenge you in putting God first is in your decision making process.

Here is the standard, and the order, that each one of us needs to consider when we make decisions.

Psalms 119:105 - Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.

However, since they were lamps for the feet the people could only see ahead to their next step. When you spend time reading your Bible, God will show you the next step that you need to take in life.

The church has been mandated by God to live in unity as the Body of Christ with Jesus operating as the head of the Church. A Church that is following God’s will and direction will be able to help you follow God’s will and direction as well.

Because we all have a similar cause and a similar mission, which is to spread the gospel of Jesus Christ and to declare and establish the Kingdom of God, we all are affected by the decisions that we will make.

Church, as we continue to put God first in our life we are going to see him work wonders through our lives, our families, our Church. Our region will be completely transformed by the goodness of God. People will come to our homes and say, God is so good and here is the evidence.

My prayer is that every member of this Church will actively put God first in the way that we spend our time, the way that we spend our resources, and the way that we make decisions.
