From the Desk of the Pastor

Let's continue to pray for one another. This is of course a difficult time that we are in the midst of.  We continue in prayer for the entire world, nation and especially those health care professionals, first responders and those in those essential need positions that must confront not only the essential work that needs to be done but the health risks they must confront each day. We pray for this body of Christ that we seek the protection

"Prayer for Protection"

The Light of God surrounds me. The Love of God enfolds me. The power of God protects me. The Presence of God watches over me.  The Mind of God guides me. The Life of God flows through me. The Laws of God direct me. The Power of God abides within me. The Joy of God uplifts me. The Strength of God renews me. The Beauty of God inspires me. Wherever I am, God is!

By the grace of God may the family and friends be uplifted during this difficult time.

Services continue to be temporarily cancelled as we abide by the policies of the State and local authorities Stay at Home Order to not congregate with more than 10 people now extended through May 15th. The services at Citizen of Zion pastors anniversary (fourth Sunday in April) are postponed to a later date.

There are also Sunday Live Stream services at Atherton Baptist Church (8am) & Christ Second Baptist Long Beach (9:30am). This an opportunity to view local services on the computer.

We thank God for the turnout for the “Drive-Through Communion” on Easter Sunday April 12th. Our plan is to once again have a Drive-Through Communion on first Sunday May 3rd, once again from 10am to 12pm.

Finally, what can we do as a body of Christ during this time that we are experiencing this physical distancing from each other.

  • Continue Reaching Out to One Another – Calls, Emails, texting messages

  • Continue praying for one another

  • Certainly an Opportune Time to Read Scripture and Christian literature

MAY GOD CONTINUE TO BLESS YOU!! BE SAFE!  BE WELL!

Psalm 27:1-6

HOPE IN THE MIDST OF YOUR BATTLES

My favorite scripture is the 27th number of Psalms. It is a great message to us and in this time in which we live it provides hope in the midst of our battles. David clearly expresses his confidence and trust in the Lord.

As we read the words of this psalm, I see the imagery of battle being portrayed in these verses.  Words like “enemies” and “foes” in verse 2; “host” in verse 3; “war” in verse 3; and “enemies” in verse 6 all speak of warfare. It appears that David is in a difficult situation.  Yet, it is also very clear from reading these verses that even in the midst of the battles he is fighting, David still has hope.

Hope is a powerful thing. G. K. Chesterton said, “There is no medicine like hope, no incentive so great, and no tonic so powerful as expectation of something better tomorrow.”

Here is how the dictionary describes hope. “to have a wish to get or do something or for something to happen or be true, especially something that seems possible or likely.” Hope, from the world’s viewpoint is just what that definition describes.  The world sees hope as a wish or a desire. Hope, for the world, is a longing for something that may or may not take place.

The Bible teaches us a vastly different definition of hope. Listen to the words of Jeremiah, “Blessed is the man that trusteth in the LORD, and whose hope the LORD is,”Jer. 17:7.  Hear also Paul, “And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity,”1 Cor. 13:13. The world says that hope is merely a fond wish or desire.  But, the words used for hope in the Bible tell a different story.  They teach us that hope is “A deep settled confidence that God will keep His promises!

We all have battles; but do you have hope?  Are you resting in the sure confidence that God will do just as He has promised He would?  That is the essence of hope and hope is a possession we all need to be sure we own in large quantities.

In the great hymn the Solid Rock, it begins with MY HOPE IS BUILT ON NOTHING LESS THAN JESUS CHRIST MY RIGHTEOUSNESS.

I.  v. 1-3 OUR CONFIDENCE IN THE LORD PROVIDES HOPE

Notice the three-fold use of the word “my” inverse 1.  David has a personal relationship with God.  This is the basic foundation for hope.

A.  v. 1  Confidence In The Person Of The Lord

David tells us that God is his “light”, his “salvation” and his “strength.”  There is a tremendous blessing in these three titles attributed to our God.

  1. As Light, God delivers His people from Darkness - Look at I Peter 2:9 –he hath called us out of darkness into his marvelous light

  2. As Salvation God delivers His people from Damnation – “Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life,John 5:24.

  3. As Strength God delivers His people from Defeat – “But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ,1 Cor. 15:57.

These three great characteristics of God serve to give us hope even in the midst of battle!  Because of Who our God is, we need not fear any enemy that should arise against us.  We should praise HIM for who HE is.

We know that there some that have the ability to do something but when it is time to perform they fall short. They don’t come through but let's consider our Lord’s performance

.

B.  v. 2-3  Confidence In The Performance Of The Lord

David declares that his present hope in the Lord rests upon that which the Lord has done for him in the past. God did not fail him then, and He will not fail His child today.

That same confidence is ours today!   The God we serve is unchangeable, Mal. 3:6; Heb. 13:8.  He is the same God with the same power that He has always been. He has never, and He will never change. Because He has been faithful in the past, we can count on His being faithful now.

You don’t have to think about David but what he has done for YOU

(Ill. Think of all the things He has done; the victories He has won; the enemies He has vanquished; the mountains He has moved; the victories He has won.  Think on these things and remember that the God who performed countless wonders in the past is still that same God today!  That should give His people hope!)

II. v. 4 OUR COMMITMENT TO THE LORD PROVIDES HOPE

David mentions three goals in this verse.  These three goals all arise from a single commitment to serve the Lord faithfully from a heart of love. Notice how David’s commitment to the Lord manifests itself.)

A.  He Is Committed To Lingering Near The Lord

David wants to spend his entire life in the house of the Lord. He wants to be in that place where the Lord dwells and where the Lord’s presence is real. This is a theme David repeated in Psalm 84:1-4. There, David envies the little birds that make their nests around the tabernacle. They can be near the house of God all the time, while David cannot. He has a desire to be where God is; to be in that place where God is worshiped and honored. That is his heartbeat.

That ought to be our desire as well.  We need that same passion to be where the Lord is honored and where He is worshiped. Of course, we have the church and we are commanded to be in attendance, Heb. 10:25. But, in times like today there ought to be a desire to find that place of closeness and intimacy with the Lord. So when we can’t get too church we need to have that closeness with the Lord.

If there is a genuine desire to be near Him, it will manifest itself in clear action.  There will be a commitment to prayer and to the study of the Word of God.  There will be a commitment to public and private worship.  Those who want to linger near the Lord will find a way.  And, when we make a move toward Him, He will make a move toward us, James 4:8. – Draw near to the Lord and he will draw near to you.

B.  He Is Committed To Loving The Lord

David wants to “behold the beauty of the Lord.”  That is, he wants to “seek His face.”  You see, not only is David committed to being where the Lord is; but he is also committed to worshiping the Lord.  That is a worthy goal for life! This should be the goal of every believer as well.  If we are going to worship the Lord, we are going to have to do it His way.  Jesus told us how to worship inJohn 4:24.  As we yield to the Spirit of God and worship God for Who He is as He is revealed in the Word of God, we will be engaged in the business of loving Him.  How long has it been since you just loved on the Lord?

C.  He Is Committed To Leaning On The Lord

David also expresses his desire to call upon the Lord; to commune with God; and to make requests of God.  This is another image of worship.  David here declares his utter dependence upon the Lord for the necessities of life.  David looks beyond his own abilities and sees the limitless provisions of the Lord.  Therefore, he wants nothing more than to be able to call upon the Lord Jer. 33:3; Matt. 11:28.  We are promised that God will hear and answer our prayers, Isa. 65:24; John 14:13-14; John 16:23-24.  Therefore, let us also learn to lean upon Him!  Instead of worry and fear, let us learn to turn to the Lord.  He will see to our needs, Phil. 4:6-7; 19.  He will never fail us nor will He ever turn us away empty-handed, Matt. 7:7-11.

III.  v. 5-6 OUR COMFORT IN THE LORD PROVIDES HOPE

A. v. 5  God Has A Sheltered In Place For Us

We are being told now to shelter in place. This may sound familiar to those who know the Bible, A similar order was given in Egypt many years ago as the Hebrews sheltered in place as the death angel passed over them. David tells us that the Lord will hide him in His pavilion. A king’s pavilion was a tent that erected in the middle of the army’s encampment. The tent was then surrounded by an army of brave soldiers.  With all the host of the army camped about, the king’s pavilion was the safest place on the battlefield.  Those who were fortunate enough to be allowed to enter the king’s pavilion were protected by the soldiers and entertained by the king during the battle.

As the battles of life rage about us, we are safely tucked away in our King’s pavilion. The Bible tells us that “your life is hid with Christ in God”,Col. 3:3!  Could there be a safer place in all the universe? Of course not! Those who have entered His pavilion are protected by Him and, even while the battles rage around them, they are entertained with the peace and joy of the King Himself.  This is promise to those who will abide in that close place! No enemy can penetrate the defenses and enter this private place. It is protected from the enemy!

The assurance of His sheltering place allows us to weather the storms of life with hope. This was what allowed David to face Goliath. This was the confidence that kept Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego in a fiery furnace and Daniel in a lions den. This was the knowledge that allowed Paul to continue, even when he suffered greatly, 2 Cor. 12:7-11.

B .  v. 5-6a  God Has A Secure Place For Us

David has the assurance that even when life threatens to overflow him, the Lord will set him on a rock, a place that is unchangeable, powerful and immovable.  Of course, this Rock he refers to is none other than the Lord Himself, Psa. 40:1-2.  The rock referred to in these verses is a “great craggy rock”.  It is a rock that juts far above the battles going on at its feet.  It allows those who ride its heights to rise far above the tumult beneath!

This is the gift to all those who know Him!  We are promised that we have a place of refuge that will lift us far above the stormy seas that would threaten to drown us.  Like the eagle, who takes refuge above the storm until it has passed; those who abide in Him are given grace that bears them higher than the storms and keeps them safe until danger has passed,Isa. 40:31. Those who wish to rise above there circumstances are given wings to do so!

C.  v. 6b  God Has A Special Place For Us

David says that he will worship the Lord; he will praise the Lord; because of the things the Lord has done for him.  Because the Lord has lifted him above the battles; because the Lord has hidden him away in the secret place; because the Lord sheltered him away from the terrors of the battles; he will praise His name!

What a lesson to us!  When hope has turned to reality in our lives; when the Lord has come through for us again and delivered us from the enemy; we should be quick to praise Him and offer to Him the worship and adoration He deserves.  When He brings us through our battles, He will put us in a special place from which we can exalt His lovely Name, Heb. 13:15!

Conc:  Are you fighting some battles today?  Of course you are!  But, in the midst of your battles, do you have hope?  Do you have the deep settled confidence that everything is going to be alright?  If you do praise the Lord, for He has already brought to that special place of blessing from which you can offer praise to His name.

But, if you lack that hope this evening, it can be obtained.  How? You can do this by Reaffirming your Confidence in the Lord; by Renewing your Commitment to the Lord; and by Resting in your Comfort in the Lord.  Do you need to talk to Him about your battles and about your hope? Then just take it to the Lord and leave it there.

I pray that this is true, for all seems dark.

I need your light, Lord, in every way.

I pray to be filled with your light from head to toe. To bask in your glory.

To know that all is right in the world, as you have planned, and as you want it to be.

Sermon On Being Watchful I Chronicles 12:32

I have been struck by so many people who have stated how can the church be closed. They say it is awful that the church is closed on Easter.

They have really missed the point because the church is never closed. You can temporarily close a building but never the church.. See the church is the ecclesia , the collective congregation of baptized believers. So we take the church with us. Yes, clearly the bible is clear that we are not to forsake the assembling of ourselves as the manner of some is, but exhorting one another and so much more.

Our church experience when we gather at Holy Light and other Christian churches is to use that experience to encourage and uplift one another. I certainly miss that as many of you do as well.

So why aren’t we the faithful, the believers not jumping in our cars and coming to church on Sunday. Well we are told in scripture to be vigilant and watchful.

Take a look at this text I’ve used. This would not normally be a text I would use for a sermon. The text from 1 Chronicles 12:32 And the children of Issachar which were mthat had understanding of the times to know what Israel ought to do.

This text was relevant then as it is today. We have to realize the times that we are living in and then know what to do what relevant action needs to be taken. This means that we have to watchful and aware of the times that we are in and make decisions based on wisdom and instruction from the Holy Spirit.

So what does it mean to be watchful? Well why not look at expert such as Jesus of Nazareth, the Christ, the Son of the Living God. In John 16:13 Since we don’t know the future we need to seek the Spirit of truth.

Before I close remember when I preached about Jesus in the Garden of gethsemane. At the point of having to face the bitter cup of death and a separation from God he went to Gethsemane to pray. He was going through agony even to the point of sweating blood. Remember he wanted the disciples to be on watch but they fell asleep time after time. Jesus wanted them to be alert and to pray with him.

Jesus today wants us to be watchmen and women to this generation. I don’t know about you but God has got my attention.

Lets watch as the Lord would have us to do.

  • Watch that we are not deceived Matthew 24:4

  • Watch out for false teachers Mark 12:38

  • Watch out for and avoid all types of greed Luke 12:15

  • Watch the flock carefully if you are called to be an overseer Acts:20-28

  • Watch your life and teaching closely I timothy 4:16

  • Watch out that you don’t lose your reward in heaven 2 John 1:8

A LOOK AT CALVARY Luke 23:39-43

This is a message that I preached a few years back.

Updated for today Today, our world has its attention focused on the coronavirus pandemic. We have become locked in on testing, availability of ventilators, our brothers and sisters providing health care at risk to their own health. We have locked into information from news outlets and daily information from the governor and mayor and the medical experts. Our eyes are on tis, wondering what will happen not only to us but our family and friends. Lots of people are looking toward China and Italy and Spain; wondering when the hammer will fall in those faraway places.  Still others are looking to Wall Street and the economy, hoping there will be an upturn.  There are many places where we can focus our attention these days. Of course, some of those places are worth some of our time and attention; while others may not be.

But, I would submit to you today that the place where all men ought to focus their attention; is the place most neglected by modern man.  Very few people ever turn their thoughts toward a place called Calvary.  But, it was there, on that little hill, where the greatest battle of the ages was waged and won.  It was Calvary where sin and Satan were vanquished and redemption and righteousness were forever claimed.  It was there that Heaven met Hell in the most spectacular battle ever fought.  It was there that Heaven claimed the eternal victory over Hell for all who will trust in Jesus.

Today on this resurrection Sunday I would like to direct our thoughts, our hearts and our focus away from our situation toward Calvary for a few minutes.  I want to look in on some of the events that occurred the day that Jesus went to the cross to die for you and me.  Specifically, I want to examine those three crosses and the men that hung upon them

Why, you might ask, should we even bother to spend our time considering an event that took place more than two thousand years ago? The answer to that question is two-fold.  First, by looking to Calvary, we can see what Jesus accomplished there for us.  Secondly, in looking to Calvary we can see the men who died there that day, and in seeing them, we might just see ourselves.  If that happens, we will be in a position to partake in what He did for us there; and, if we have already received Jesus, we can enjoy what He did for us even more.

v. 39 LOOK AND SEE A HARDENED SINNER

His Deeds

We are told that this man is amalefactor.  This word means, “evil doer.”  He was a wicked man who broke the law and is paying for his crimes with his very life.

His Derision

We are told that this man “railed” on Jesus.  This word means, “to speak evil of, or to blaspheme

What triggered this intense hatred of Jesus?   We are not sure what set him off. Whatever his motivation, this poor man spent the last pitiful hours of his life mocking the only One Who could have saved his soul and kept him out of Hell.

His Doubt

This man reveals the true nature of his attitude toward Jesus when he uses the word “if.”  He is saying, “I will believe You if You will save Yourself and us.  If You are so great, then why don’t you say us all?”  His words reveal a heart that is unconvinced, unconcerned and unconverted.  His words reveal the heart of a lost man!

He spent his last moments denying that Jesus was the Messiah.  He spent his time blaspheming the name of Jesus. Again, this man is no different than folk all around us today.  There are plenty of people who have no trouble taking the precious name of the Lord in vain.  There are many who think nothing of using the Lord’s name as a curse word or as a by-word. I have seen some airwaves who have asked today in derision where is God in the midst of this pandemic.

The trait that marks so many in our day and proves them to be like this poor, dying thief, is the fact that they refuse to believe in Jesus for their soul’s salvation.  Like this man, their lives center on “if.” When you witness to them, there is always some objection, some argument, some excuse offered as to why they cannot and will not come to faith in Jesus.  It may sound simple, but it is proof positive that they are lost and headed to Hell without God!

  • First, nothing you are living for, outside Jesus, is worth dying for, Mark 8:35-36

  • Second, today is your wake-up call.  God is letting you know that you need to turn to Him and be saved. I believe what we are going through today is a wake up call 2 Cor. 6:2; Isa. 55:6.

  • Third, there is only one way that will ever happen: you must believe in Jesus by faith, or you will be lost forever, John 8:24

II. v. 40-42 LOOK AND SEE AN HONEST SINNER

His Admission

When this man begins to rebuke the other thief, he makes a stunning confession.  He says, “Now wait a minute!  We are guilty, and we are getting exactly what we deserve!” this admission reveals that this man was under conviction because of his sinful deeds.  He is an honest sinner.  By the way, that is refreshing to this preacher!

His Assessment

His assessment of the situation is vastly different from that of the other thief.  The first man was looking for a way out.  This man was looking for a way in! When he was first nailed to the cross, he lifted up his voice and mocked Jesus too,Mark 15:32.  But, something happened during those early hours on the cross. Something caught his attention and revealed to his heart that Jesus was no ordinary man. This shows that it is never too late to make a life changing decision. This sinner in a short time went from a ticket to hell to an express jet to heaven

Perhaps it was His silence as they nailed Jesus to His cross –Isa. 53:7.  Perhaps it was the grace with which Jesus responded to the mockery of His enemies –Luke 23:34.    Perhaps it was the mocking sign they hung over the cross of Jesus that proclaimed Him to be King of the Jews –Luke 23:38.       It could have been any number of things that spoke to his heart.  But, whatever it was told him that Jesus was no ordinary man!  As this man surveyed the situation at Calvary that day, he came to see that Jesus was the Messiah and that Jesus was his only hope!  He called Jesus “God” inverse 40.  He acknowledged Christ’s sinlessness inverse 41.  He even looks to Jesus for salvation inverse 42

His Appeal

As this man speaks to Jesus, he makes an incredible request.  He asks another dying man for hope for the future.  That is incredible!  When this man looked at Jesus Christ, he did not see a dying victim of the Roman system. This is what happens when you really set your heart on Jesus.   Everyone else, for the most part, saw nothing more than just another poor man hanging, battered and bleeding on a cross.  But, this man looked at Jesus and he saw God,verse 40.  He looked at Jesus and he saw perfect righteousness, verse 41.  He looked at Jesus and he saw One Who was going to somehow conquer death; rise again; rule in power and glory and extend grace to the undeserving, verse 42!  He looked at Jesus, Who was wearing that cruel crown of thorns and he saw Jesus wearing three crowns.  He placed Jesus on the throne of the universe by calling Him “Lord.”  He placed Jesus on the throne of his own heart by saying “remember me".

In my opinion, this man exhibited as great a faith as anyone else in the entire Bible.  He grasped the essence of who Jesus was; of what Jesus was doing; and of what Jesus would do.  He not only grasped it; but he believed it all!  He believed it in spite of how impossible it must have looked to him at the time.  This thief displayed the essence of true faith in his heart and his words as he died on that cross,Heb. 11:1.

LORD REMEMBER ME, ALBERTINA WALKER

He did the 3 things that must be done when you come to Jesus

  • First, he was honest about his own sins.  He freely admitted that he was guilty.  Admitting that you are a sinner is the first step in coming to faith in Jesus!  I would just remind you that Jesus came to save sinners and not righteous people, Luke 19:10; Mark 2:17. But, this seems to be the hardest thing of all!  It is getting harder and harder to find sinners in our day and time.  It’s easy to spot what we call sinners in the world, but we need to understand that every person in this world, who is outside of a relationship with Jesus Christ, is a sinner!  Ill. Rom. 3:22.  There is no difference between the president and the homeless person; the star and the downtrodden; the policeman and the pimp; the doctor and the patient; and the warden and the criminal.  All are sinners and the first step in getting those sins taken care of is to admit that truth!

  • Second, he became convinced that Jesus was Who He claimed to be.  As long as Jesus is just another man, you will never be saved.  But, when you come to the place where you see Him as God, Savior, Lord and the fulfillment of all the promises of God, you can be saved.  When you understand that He died on that cross, like the Bible says; that He rose again, like the Bible says; Rom. 10:9; 10:13

  • Third, he was willing to call on Jesus for that which he needed in his life.  Far too many people know the truth and know what they need to do.  All they lack is acting on what they know and calling out to the Lord for their soul’s salvation.  If you come to Him, He will not turn you away, John 6:37.  If you will call to Him, He will save your soul, Acts 16:31; John 6:47; John 3:16; Isa. 45:22.

III.  v. 43 LOOK AND SEE A HOLY SAVIOR

His Grief

Let us remember that even though Jesus was God, even as He hung on that cross, He was experiencing the same anguish and torments that the two thieves were experiencing.  The agony was unimaginable and the suffering Jesus endured was very real.  His death was a brutal, horrific affair.  It was far worse than the mind could comprehend.  A few passages speak about the terrible nature of the death Jesus died,Isa. 52:14; Psa. 129:3; Isa. 50:6, Psa. 22, etc.  However, those verses only tell the physical side of what Jesus endured for us.  His pain was for more than physical.  While He was on that cross, He literally became sin,2 Cor. 5:21.  He was judged as if He were sin itself!  His judgment as sin was so complete that He was literally alienated from His Father as He was judged,Matt. 27:46.  And, even as Jesus endured all that He did at the hands of men and of God; He was doing it for you and me.  He was doing it for that thief who cried out in simple, child-like faith.  He was enduring it all so that you could bow before Him and ask Him to save your soul.

His Grace

Even as Jesus hung there in agony that day; His heart was on finding His Own lost sheep.  That was why He came,Luke 19:10; Mark 10:45.  That was why He left the ninety and nine went after the lost sheep,Luke 15:3-7.  The grace of God was in evidence that day even as Jesus died on the cross. Anyone else might have looked at that poor, dying thief and said, “You rejected the way of God in your life; now will go to Hell in your death!”  But not Jesus!  He loved that sinner in spite of his sins and He extended grace to him

His Guarantee

The thief was looking for something from Jesus way down the road.  What he received was a promise that everything he was looking for had just been proved to him by his simple cry of faith.  Jesus gave him a guarantee that his eternity was forever altered; and that the changes would begin immediately!

He hasn’t changed one bit!  It doesn’t matter where the road of life has carried.  It does not matter what you might have done in your life.  If you will come to Jesus, you will find a Friend Who will receive you just like you are.  He will love you, save you, change you and make a new creature out of you.  He will cleanse you from your sins and give you a brand new start.  He will save your soul!  That is what He did for the thief.  That is what He did for me and you.

When you look at Calvary, what do you see? I see a Savior Who loved me so much that He willingly took my place on that cross so that I could be saved from my sins and miss the fires of Hell!  I see that hill as the place where my past was erased and my future was forever secured.

That’s what the honest sinner saw. As we look to Calvary and realize that you need to thank the Lord for all that He did for you there.  Yes we can even do that in the midst of our situation and all that is going on in the world. He Is the ONLY ONE who we need in the midst of it all.
