African American Church Evangelism Institute

I have begun participating in the institute as part of a 18 month cohort with our pastors in the nation about learning tools to enhance the mission the church to become a conversion church. Partnering with Pastors to Cultivate Conversion Growth 59% of churches across America are either plateauing or declining, 31% of churches are growing preliminary through transfer growth, and only 10% of churches are growing significantly through conversion growth. Through a two year cohort, pastors learn how to revitalize their congregation by helping them to become “conversion communities”, where churched and de-churched people come to faith, grow in their faith, and their congregations become more welcoming places for emerging and young adults. The African American Church Evangelism Institute is a movement of Africa American churches reaching out with the gospel to impact the world – Community by Community!

Individuals in Los Angeles County may qualify to receive up to three free meals a day if you: Meet age requirements:

  • Are 65 or older; OR

  • Are 60-64 and have been diagnosed with or exposed to COVID-19 or are at high risk as defined by the CDC

  • Live alone or with one other program-eligible adult

  • Are not currently receiving assistance from other state or federal nutrition assistance programs, like CalFresh/SNAP or Meals on Wheels

  • Have difficulty accessing food resources or preparing your own meals

  • Age 60 years and older

  • An individual with a permanent or temporary disability

  • Dependent Adults (age 18 to 59)

Items must be pre-paid and ready for pick-up (like from a grocery store or drugstore). When you know your items are ready, call 1-888-863-7411 between 8:00 am and 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday, to schedule your free delivery. They will pick-up and deliver items to you anytime — 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. There is a maximum for each person to use this service in one month. You can use this for up to four deliveries a month, or up to 40 miles total per month, whichever comes first. For example, if it's 40 miles from a pick-up location to your house, you can only have that one delivery for the month. This program is managed by the Los Angeles County Department of Workforce Development, Aging and Community Services (WDACS), with the support of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors.

Older Adults

County and City of Los Angeles The County and City of Los Angeles are distributing packaged and frozen meals for older adults. Distribution is taking place at their congregate meal sites and senior centers. These sites remain closed for all other services. Please note that older adults 65 and older must send a family member, friend or caregiver who is under the age of 65 to pick-up meals at these sites. 2022 COVID-19 Senior Emergency Response Program

Program is available until the end of January.

With the resurgence of COVID and its variants, MAPS Charities is reimplementing our Emergency Response Program for seniors (60+) in LA County currently experiencing dire financial difficulties due to these outbreaks. The grants given will be restricted to grocery cards and rent assistance only.

While a written request with backup documentation will still be necessary on behalf of the senior, we have adjusted certain requirements in order to expedite the requests:

1. Decisions will be made within 48-72 hours of receipt of request and backup documentation. 2. COVID grants awarded will not affect the opportunity for a senior to receive a regular MAPS Charities grant. 3. Food card amounts will be raised to a maximum of $250 per individual. 4. Dollar amounts for rent are $1000 per individual. 5. Initial Program will run from January 5-31, 2022.

Emergency Requests must come from a Professional Senior Advocate (PSA). No applications are accepted directly from the senior in need. ONLY PSAs may complete the form.

Scammers are sending fake IRS emails about Economic Impact Payments

There’s a fake IRS email that keeps popping into people’s inboxes. It says that you can get a third Economic Impact Payment (EIP) if you click a link that lets you “access the form for your additional information” and “get help” with the application. But the link is a trick. If you click it, a scammer might steal your money and your personal information to commit identity theft. It’s yet another version of the classic government impersonator scam. Here are ways to avoid this scam: Know that the government will never call, text, email, or contact you on social media saying you owe money, or to offer help getting a third Economic Impact Payment (EIP). If you get a message with a link from someone claiming to be from the IRS or another government agency, don’t click on it. It’s a scam. Scammers will often send fake links to websites or use bogus email addresses and phone numbers that seem to be from the government. Your best bet is to visit the IRS’s website directly for trustworthy information on EIP payments. Say no to anyone who contacts you, claiming to be from a government agency and asking for personal or financial information, or for payment in cash, gift cards, wire transfers, or cryptocurrency. Whether they contact you by phone, text, email, on social media, or show up in person, don’t share your Social Security, Medicare ID, driver’s license, bank account, or credit card numbers. And know that the government would never ask you to pay to get financial help. Report government impersonators to ReportFraud.ftc.gov. Your report makes a difference. Reports like yours help us investigate, bring law enforcement cases, and alert people about what frauds to be on the lookout for so they can protect themselves, their friends, and family.
